The little house at 87-89 Pownal Street is said to be over 170 years old. Imagine! A house older than Confederation! We wonder if John-A ever lifted an ale in the tavern that once resided at the property? Maybe the Fathers of Confederation took a stroll down Richmond from Province House to take part in a liquid celebration?

What we do know about the building is that is has stood on the same corner from the time that roads were dusted with red soil. Back when the Charlottetown Jail was just next door at Connaught Park... convenient walking distance to the tavern. After a brief stint as a boarding house, it changed hands to the Kays family circa 1926.

Saied and Esma raised their brood of girls-- Hazel, Doreen and Diane -- while operating the local S.N. Kays Corner Store. Those that attended Rochford Square School have fond memories of getting treats with their pocket money at the Kays' local store.

After a number of years, S. N. Kays closed its doors in 1976 while the Kays family still lived in the house. The commercial space was then occupied by Paul's Flowers and Island Furriers, showing that this prime corner of Charlottetown was destined to be a business hub.

With that said, we are proud to have Fresh Media following in the footsteps of successful local entrepreneurs who once treaded the floors of this little house.
